"Noble Family" a partial panel from a large screen, Chinese, mid nineteenth century; ink, tempera, watercolor and gold leaf on paper, 42" H x 33" W sight. The naturalistic treatment of the faces on the two adults contrasts strikingly with the more characteristic idealization of the three other figures and architectural elements. There are two irregular tears about a foot long at the lower edge of the paper. There are many cracks and small losses in the paint, particularly in the lower right quarter, but they do not interfere with appreciation of the image.
