Portrait of the American clipper ship "Fatherland," a starboard broadside view of a graceful ship sailing fast under all plain sail, skillfully painted with a full length female figurehead standing on volutes at the bow, and three sailors in red on deck. Unsigned oil on canvas, 26 1/4” high x 36 1/2” wide (sight). The ship flies a Trumbull pattern (large star within a circle of stars) American flag at the spanker gaff. "Fatherland" was built in Boston in 1854, but soon had English owners. A large two-deck ship, she drew 21 feet and displaced 1,150 tons. She last appeared in Lloyd's Register in 1861, which probably was the year she was taken out of service. Lined, restored and cleaned.
